What are primary colours?

These are colours that cannot be made by mixing other colours together. They are – RED, BLUE and YELLOW

What is a secondary colour?

If you mix two primary colours together, you make a secondary colour as follows:

  • Mix red and blue to make PURPLE
  • Mix blue and yellow to make GREEN
  • Mix yellow and red to make ORANGE

What is a tertiary colour?

Tertiary colours are neutral colours such as BROWN and GREY.

  • Mixing three primary colours together, you create a tertiary colour or if you mix a primary colour and a secondary colour you also create a tertiary colour.

Black and White

Black adds shadow to a colour, i.e. makes the colour darker:

  • Add black to LIGHT BLUE to make DARK BLUE
  • Adding white makes a colour lighter:
  • Add white to RED to make PINK.
